About

From an early age I’ve been led down a curious path by my passion for visual expression mixed with my intrigue of the natural world. From mud pies and dens, to dolls heads and barbed wire; from religious themes to resurrected birds – much of my work is an expression and reaction to childhood memories.

I also explore relationships between beauty and perceived ugliness, questioning perceptions and examining taste through visual metaphors. I use pattern and form to surprise – fluttery and feminine revealing a darker side; light playing with shadow and traditional forms with a modern twist.

Working from my studio in the beautiful Derbyshire town of Wirksworth, I create light pieces from cast bone china and hand blown glass and surface designs which are used on vintage or reproduction furniture. Much of my work is interlinked with my drawings and poems which are then digitally printed onto fabrics or sandblasted onto glass shades which project delicate but slightly edgy shapes and patterns.

All the bone china parts are produced by myself, from lathed models through to the firing. For the glass, upholstery and reproduction chairs I use local crafts people. Where possible I source parts and services from the UK. It’s important to me that my business is built on integrity. I enjoy building relationships with skilled people as I see them as crafts men/women who are keeping traditional skills alive. I think that if we want a sincere, exciting and broad approach to the future of design we need to not just embrace progress but also support our heritage of traditional skills.
